House Guide: 3 Important Work Areas in a Kitchen

In a house, the bedroom and toilet and bath are considered key areas because of the purposes they serve. The bedroom is used for resting and sleeping while the bathroom is for doing personal hygiene activities. An equally essential and functional house area, however, is the kitchen. It’s where people prepare, cook, and store food items, and, sometimes, even eat. It’s only right, then, that careful consideration should be given when designing a kitchen.

If you’re having your house built or just remodeling your kitchen, here are three essential work centers of a kitchen you need to look into when planning this vital area of your home.

Preparation center

First, there is the food preparation work center. As the name indicates, this is where you prepare food for cooking, baking, serving, or storing. This center, of course, should have the sink for washing and cleaning food items and kitchenware.

It must also feature the work surfaces or countertops, where you’ll do the cutting, measuring, mixing, plating, and packing. Whether you live in New York or Salt Lake City, many companies offer a variety of work surfaces, such as quartz countertops and glass or marble worktops, so choose the option that’ll suit your taste and needs. Ideally, the preparation center should be close to — if not in the middle of — both the refrigerator and stove.

Cooking center

Second, you have the cooking center. This is the area in the kitchen where you’ll cook or bake food. You’ll have your cooking appliances here, the most basic of which will be your stove. If you’re also planning on baking, it’ll be better to get a range, so you’ll have a stove and an oven in a single piece of equipment. Getting a range hood is a good idea as well if you’ll be spending a lot of time cooking in your kitchen.

Keep in mind your cooking needs, the kitchen space available, and your budget when choosing your kitchen appliances. In terms of location, the cooking center should be easily accessible from the prep area.

Storage center

Third, a kitchen needs to have a storage area. This is, naturally, the kitchen section you’ll be using to store food (raw or cooked) and other essential food and kitchen items. This center will consist mainly of shelves, cupboards, drawers, and the refrigerator. These storage units will help keep your kitchen neat and organized. You can, for example, place food items like canned tomatoes and flour on the top shelf while your silverware can go in the drawers under the countertops. Except for the refrigerator, your storage units must be in the same area as your prep section — just above or below the counters.

The Kitchen is an Essential Part of a Home

Like your bedroom and bathroom, your kitchen serves a crucial function in your house and your life. This is mostly where you prepare, cook, store, and eat food for your sustenance. You should make every effort, then, to know more about its essential work centers to have a well-designed and well-organized kitchen.
